EU Referendum

In 1973 the UK joined the EU (then called the EEC). The EU promotes peace and free trade between its member states. We are soon going to have a referendum on whether we should stay in the European Union.

The EU has created many far-right anti-EU parties, including UKIP and the French FN. These parties have a reputation for being intolerant so I don’t think these parties would be good for the countries they are in. Every party is divided; this is especially evident in the Conservative party. The Tories are divided on the subject of Europe. On one side there is the right wing anti-EU MPs, and on the other side there is the more centrist members, led by Cameron. With the referendum coming up, many MPs have been wondering if they can campaign for Britain to leave. The PM recently said that cabinet members that campaigned for a no vote would be fired. He then later said that he was ‘misinterpreted’.

The EU was created after WW2 when many states wanted to prevent another European war. The European Unicorns members club together for mutual economic and political benefit. The European parliament in Brussels is made up of MEPs from each country. The European parliament makes laws on issues that affect its member states, including environmental issues. The EU benefits our economy a lot through trade.

Sceptics do not like the idea of an ever closer Europe. They say we lose billions a pound a year through lost trade. We did not go through with the Euro, keeping the pound sterling, and some might say this proves the EU is bad for Britain as the Euro faced a crisis a few years ago and may do so again with Greece. However, it recently emerged that many major British companies had made plans to leave the UK if we left the EU. This would be catastrophic for British industry and could leave many unemployed.

Overall I think that the EU is good for Britain’s economy and it would be disastrous for the country if we left. If we left then where would we look to trade? We would probably become a state dependent on the USA. The EU is good for the UK, so we should accept this
